I recall years ago, an article in the September 1986 issue of Omni Magazine (a great science and science fiction magazine I’m sad is no longer with us)… an article about the ideal future house… a “living breathing” house that was “aware” of its inhabitants and their individual preferences. It had all the automatic computer environmental controls, etc. The modern household is not too far off from the one I was amazed by in the Omni article.
The premise is that all of our needs are met with only a modicum of effort, and this is accomplished step by step. Things progress by logical steps… analog clocks became digital, wood stoves became gas furnaces, the broom and dustpan became the vacuum cleaner, games like charades and scavenger hunts… sadly… became video games, the paper and pen notebook became… gladly… well, the notebook computer, etc. Well, a few months ago all this logical progression got me thinking about the computer and we all know that it really is a basic essential in today’s society and in almost every home. So, what is the next logical step for the home… more specifically the home computer? To have your computer EARN MONEY for you while you are sleeping, in the backyard with friends and family and a hot BBQ, and on vacation! Yes, my friends… welcome to the future… and the future is not only making money with your computer… but making money passively. Passive online income is the key that differentiates between what the computer was and what the computer is… between only earning an hourly wage and living the dream!
So what does it take to start earning passive online income? Here are 4 foundational steps, like the corners of a house or pyramid, that I will go into greater detail concerning in later articles, but the main point of all these steps is as a strategy to bring people to your site and to make them glad they found it… to increase traffic and convert your readers to buyers:
1. A blogsite that you post to a few times a week… the more informative unique content on a topic you are passionate about, the better. Remember… informative unique content. Pick a domain name; read The Basics of Making A Niche Site for more info on choosing keywords to use as domain names. Register your domain name through the #1 domain name registrar… GoDaddy.com. Host your domain… I use GreenGeeks.com as they are 300% Wind Powered Green Hosting, and being green is what Ecoculture Village (the only reason for this site) is all about! Build a blog with WordPress.org. Read Getting Started… WordPress, Domain Registrars & Webhosts for more information on all this. And please just do yourself the initial favor of purchasing a premium theme… StudioPress’ Genesis and DIY Themes’ Thesis are without a doubt the 2 main contenders. I chose Genesis. Believe me; I’ve gone through the hassles of learning that free themes have bugs and little if any viable support. Genesis makes is too easy to not start a professional blog if you are thinking about it.
2. Social networking is a great way to get your first readers if you are not initially ranked as high on Google search as you would like to be… and even if you are! Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+… to name a few… are your friends. Search those sites for people interested in your topic and don’t be afraid to ‘friend’ and ‘follow’ them and bring them into your circles. Also, have the above-mentioned share buttons on your blog so your readers can tell their peeps about your informative unique content… just like I do… see mine on the left? Isn’t it cool!?! Go ahead. Use it! Like literally, right now… share my blog with your world!
3. An email list… you may have heard it said a 1000 times — the money is in the list — so now you have heard it 1001 times. This list is how you will keep in contact with your readers, informing them of new posts and making them relevant offers on products you believe they will find useful. This is where you will make most of your commissions. AWeber is considered the defacto definitive email marketing tool, and they will get you started for only $1 for your first month… which is an awesome deal!!! But I started with MailChimp, and I like them for the direct control I have over the html and css… I am a bit of a code geek… and for the fact that I can send 12,000 emails per month to 2,000 subscribers for free! Although price should not be your deciding factor; email through-rate and how you like the features and usability should be. I suggest you try Aweber for 30 days for $1 and if it does not let you get your coding hands dirty enough, try MailChimp.
4. Blog commenting is a way… as silly as it might at first sound … for your readers to have a relationship with you, but this is crucial. When people appreciate what you write, they want to tell you about it, and you should value and respond to their comments… and look forward to getting the occasional bits of good advice from your readers as well. It’s all about relationship… being a real person… personally expressing and sharing appreciation (appreciate = increase the value of).
So, that’s my quick list to get you started about thinking about laying the foundations of your passive online income strategy. I hope you like it, and have fun!
