My fire making kit is composed of several very different items… from different tinders, to different ways to make sparks, and also to different ways to make flame. This is not only redundancy… two is one, one is none… but also overlap. Each item has a circumstantial strength, but also a circumstantial limitation compensated for by another item in the kit. A good fire starting device must be and do several things:

• Be durable;
• Be easily visible;
• Be intuitive to use;
• Able to be used one-handed;
• Produce lots of hot sparks that will reliably ignite a variety of tinders;
• Come with its own emergency tinder that will work even if wet;
• All finite components (sparking component and emergency tinder) must be refillable/replaceable.

Most survival oriented individuals will choose a ferrocerium rod because ferro rods last a long time, and they easily produce enough sparks hot enough to ignite a variety of natural and man-made tinders. The Lightning Strike is a ferrocerium rod type of fire starter, but it takes the concept to a whole new level, as in addition to having a hollow aluminum handle that contains enough emergency tinder to start at least 20 fires… even if the tinder gets wet… BUT the aluminum housing extends down beyond the ferro rod which channels and focuses the hot sparks into a small area! This is very effective in concentrating the sparks directly onto the tinder where you want them.
