What Is A Survival Group?
A survival group is a collection of aware and informed individuals who have come together in the anticipation that the day (or night) will come when going it alone is not the wisest option in terms of survivability.
Why Form Or Join A Survival Group?
We are social animals and there is safety in numbers. This is why we humans tend to look to others concerning those things that concern us… our survival depends on each other. We feel the need to trust in each others’ attitudes and beliefs because we all know there will be a time when loyalty will be tested. As well, we all feel the need to be able to have confidence in our own and other group members’ attitudes and skills.
Form Or Join A Group Before The SHTF (Shit Hits The Fan)
When forming a group of any kind, we want those who most agree with our way of thinking and doing. This is especially true of a survival group, where everybody’s mindset is going to be tested.
Everyone has different attitudes, beliefs, experiences, opinions, and skills… and this diversity of mindset is generally thought of as the bread and butter of group cohesion, so long as it is not too divergent. Some of these mindsets will remain the same after being tested by a SHTF event… and some will change… some may change so dramatically that they may even downright panic… or worse yet, betray the group entirely!
Individuals may be entirely sincere about wanting to form or join a survival group before SHTF and with good intentions above and beyond the idea of collectivism as a necessity to individual survival; but when things get tough, and the tougher things get, there is an ever increasing chance that some individual’s will no longer see the benefits of adhering to group ideals, and may become a self-interested danger to group cohesion and resources, and perhaps even a threat to the safety of group members or to those outside the group… which could quickly add a new level of difficulty to an already challenging set of circumstances… animosity… enemies!
What we need is consistency of mindset before and after SHTF. And so we must be able to make the best determinations we can concerning several questions when thinking about the mindsets of those we are considering forming or joining a survival group with:
Is there a way to determine before SHTF how consistent an individual’s mindset will remain after SHTF?
What are an individual’s true motives for wanting to form or join a survival group?
You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

I have come across a card game that asks the hard questions between survival and morality that could possibly be inherent to a real survival situation you and your group might find yourself in someday. This game seems like an excellent way to determine before SHTF who thinks in what ways and why. I have not played this game yet… but I look forward to!
